Slaley Cellar: Know your Wine.

Slaley Cellar is one of the wine estates in the Boland that take part in Die Burger & Morgan’s Wines’ Know your Wine – Ken jou Wyn – wine course.

Slaley Cellar, built in 1995, is situated on the western slopes of Simonsberg mountain near the town of Stellenbosch in the Boland region of South Africa.  They tend to make their wine with little New World influence, using long fermentation periods at high temperatures and ageing the wines in classic French barrels with exception of the Shiraz


Their main focus is on the production of quality red wines with a limited amount of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and olive oil.

 Appointment like to spend time in the champagne bar of  Morgan’s Wines showroom in Tyger Valley, Cape Town in South Africa.

Lars and Francois are well educated in the art of wine making and wine drinking  and they work very close with many wines makers to keep customers informed regarding all the products and options.

They have taught Travel Appointment a lot about how important it is to drink the right wine with the right meal and how to enjoy a nice cold white or rosé on the terrace on a sunny day or a great red in front of your fireplace with your family and friends.

At some time in your life you have to make up your mind if you want to continue with your limited knowledge of wine, or if you want to get to grips with the nitty gritty of grape varieties, terroir, regions, styles, blending and pairing.

Travel Appointment enrolled in such a hands-on wine course with Morgan’s Wines and Die Burger called “Know Your Wine” or “Ken jou Wyn”. During this course you not only enjoy some of the best wines and food that the Boland offer, but you go into the vineyards and cellars to touch, feel and sample the vines and the grapes in order to get a real understanding of what it means to make different wines. You end the four session  course by blending your own wine and pair the different wines with different food.

It is a wonderful professional entertaining experience that will satisfy you tremendously. Travel Appointment decided to promote Die Burger & Morgan’s Wine course and we have incorporated it into a Romantic Wine Escape break-a-way.

Boland Wine Course: Tour With a Difference

Travel Appointment enjoyed the following wine program tremendously:

Attend a wine course program with a difference & stay in one of the marvellous Cape Country Hotels:

The wine course will be informative yet informal and relaxed.

Day 1

Welcoming drinks and briefing at Morgan’s Wines. The detailed wine making and culinary program will be discussed by Lars and Francois.

Enjoy a cheese, cold meats and salad platter while sampling the fruit of the Cape’s vines.

Session One: In the vineyard with a trained Viticulturist.

This session will teach you everything you need to know about vines, grapes, soils and micro-climates.

The evening during dinner you will enjoy Chef Harry's line fish (cob) with dill mash in a white wine sauce and an assortment of seasonal vegetables as well as Harry’s Gourmet Beef Fillet Burger with bacon, unions, cheese, garlic mushrooms, chips and a side salad.

Day 2

Breakfast in hotel

Session Two: In the Cellar with a top wine maker.

The session will be at one of the Estates close to Stellenbosch. The winemaker will lead participants in to the cellar describing the winemaking process and you will also have the unique opportunity to try wine out of the barrel. 

Session Three: Learning all about the making and blending of wine.

An award winning wine maker will explain and guide you through the process of how to blend wines and you will be able to blend your own version of a Bordeaux blend.

Session Four: Having fun with food and wine

Lars will explain why certain wines pair well with certain foods and this all is happening while you sample the different wines and the wonderful dishes.

Travel Appointment is baie beindruk met die volgende wynkursus wat oor twee dae in die Boland aangebied word:

Dag 1

Arriveer Kaapstad Internasionale Lughawe.

Bussie neem u na Harry's  Restaurant tussen die Shiraz wingerdstokke op 'n wynlandgoed in die Paarl.

Verwelkomingsdrankies en program bespreking deur Francois en Lars van Morgan's Wine.

Na middagete leer u meer oor die druifstok, die verskillende variëtiete en hoe belangrik die grond en mikroklimaat vir die maak van goeie wyn is.

Die verskille in die “Terroir” van die Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franchhoek en Swartland word behandel en hoekom sekere druifsoorte en wyne beter aanpas by die verskillende mikro-klimate en terroirs.

Na die proe van ‘n paar wyne om die verskille te ervaar besoek ons die wingerde om meer te leer oor die groeiproses en onderhoud van die wingerdstok en die invloed wat dit op die wyn het.

Met aandete geniet ons Sjef Harry se lynvis met dille en  vlokaartappel dis in 'n witwyn sous en lekker smaaklik voorbereide groente of Harry se Gourmet Bief fillet burger met gerookte spek, uie, kaas, knoffel sampioene, skyfies en vars slaaie.

Ons leer koekom sekere wyne saam met sekere disse bedien moet word en hoe die twee mekaar aanvul.

Oornag Wynlandgoed.

Dag 2. 

Na ontbyt gaan ons na Slaley Landgoed in die Stellenbosch distrik. 

Die wynmaker  verduidelik en wys ons hoe die sap van die druif gepars word en laat ons ook proe hoe die jong wyne in die vate proe en die prosesse wat dit deurgaan voordat dit gebottel word.

Na 'n lekker kaas en kouevleis vingertete - saam met die wonderlike wyne van die Boland natuurlik - vertrek ons na die wêreldbekende La Motte Landgoed in die Franchhoek distrik. In die pragtige proelokaal en kelder leer ons meer oor hoe lank wyn in vate bly en die hele versnit proses.
Behalwe vir die proe van die wêreld bekroonde wyne van die landgoed, waag ons self om wyne te meng en te versny tot dit volmaak smaak!!!

Ons leer ook meer oor die manier wat wyn in Suid-Afrika gemaak word asook die ooreenkomste en verskille met die wyne van ander wereldstede.

Na ontbyt vertrek ons na  die Kaapstadse Internasionale Lughawe.

We had lunch at Beads restaurant in Stellenbosch on Sunday, 28 Feb 2010.

The restaurant's web page,  www.beadsrestaurant.co.za
describe the establishment as follows:

"Nestled in tranquil shade underneath majestic oak trees, yet amid the vibe and energy of Stellenbosch's historic centre - this is where you will find a lively and colourful establishment that is fast becoming one of the Winelands' premier dining destinations. Beads Restaurant caters for the contemporary palate with a menu filled with a medley of international influences - it's classical cuisine with a twist of fusion. With cosy fireplaces in every room for winter or French doors flung wide open on a balmy summer's day, it's the perfect setting for any season."

My experience of the food and ambiance is more in line with the following comments of Trip Advisor:

"Delightful Al Fresco Dining"

"This restaurant has one of the best locations in the old town quarter of Stellenbosch - it's a beautiful old building with not only great streetside seating, but a relaxed courtyard garden too."

"But while Beads's location and atmosphere is perhaps it's star attribute, the food is not to be scoffed at. It's good, honest food without pretense, thoughtfully and tastefully prepared."

Although there is a very nice courtyard, we sat on the street side pavement to get the maximum breeze and shadows to fight off the 36 degrees heat that the Cape experience at the moment.

The food was light and fresh and interesting with a good enough variety to satisfy everybody's needs.

From where we sat we had a lovely view on the old Dutch Reformed church at the top of the street.
