HOW TO USE THE ROAD REPORT

N1 BLOEMFONTEIN / COLESBERG (Example only) K11 / L10

The road is potholed and very uneven in places. Ongoing patching operations will occur with possible Stop/Go control in operation.

Rehabilitation is also in progress and motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution and obey all designated signs. Construction is

in progress between Springfontein and Orange River bridge with Stop/Go control in operation. Delays of ± 15 minute can be expected.

Due to the increasing amount of vehicle hi-jackings, motorists are advised to keep their doors locked and windows

closed at all times when travelling and to stay alert. Whatever happens, try to keep calm and don't endanger you and

cannot.

CAPE TOWN & SURROUNDS

BORCHARD'S QUARRY ROAD / VANGUARD DRIVE & BADEN POWELL ROAD

Incidents of stone-throwing have previously been reported on Borchard's Quarry Road near Cape Town International

Airport, as well as on Vanguard Drive and Baden Powell Road. Motorists are advised to be vigilant and to exercise

caution at all times. Major construction is also in progress between Borchard's Quarry and Modderdam Roads. Expect

delays during peak hours.

M4 MUIZENBERG / KALK BAY

Major upgrade of the road is in progress and motorists could encounter heavy delays. Stop/Go controlS are in operation.

Alternative routes are via Ou Kaapse weg or Boyes Drive.

M6 CHAPMAN'S PEAK DRIVE

Currently closed for routine maintenance and repairs. The alternative route is via Ou Kaapse Weg, which has been

reopened.

R300 BETWEEN THE N1 AND N2 NEAR CAPE TOWN

Rehabilitation of the road is in progress. Lane closures, delays and speed restrictions may be encountered. Expected

date of completion is June 2010. Beware of pedestrians. Incidents of stone-throwing have been reported.

R300 @ KUILS RIVER

Off-peak roadworks may be encountered with lane closures and Stop/Go control. Bridge construction is also in progress

just north of Stellenbosch. Exercise caution.

N2 KAYELITSHA

Beware of pedestrians and stray animals. Past incidents of stone-throwing and tyre burning have also been reported.

DURBAN

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Repairs are still in progress and delays may be encountered. Stop/Go control. In the Umzinto area the Umzinto Bridge to

Ghandinager Township has been washed away –a diversion is in use.

KLOOF FALLS / BRIDLE ROADS CLOSED

Due to rehabilitation of this road, it will be closed to traffic between Link Road and Abelia Road from 1 April 2009 until 30

June 2009.Residents only will be allowed at all times. Rehabilitation work will be undertaken from 08:00 –16:00.

OLD DUTCH ROAD

As a result of construction of the new Warick flyover, the road is currently closed at Warick avenue.

JOHANNESBURG

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Commenced in June 2008 the Gauteng Freeway Project will continuously be busy with major upgrades to

national roads and interchanges in Johannesburg & Pretoria. Expected duration 30 months.

Upgrading will take place on the N1 from Soweto to the N4 in Pretoria, the N3 from Alberton to the Buccleuch

interchange; sections of the N12 south of Johannesburg and the N12 & N3 from Gillooly's interchange to the R21 in

Boksburg. Construction will take place throughout the entire day. Expect major traffic disruptions and delays.

Attempts have been made to enforce lane restrictions during off-peak hours only. The major upgrades along the N1

will take place at the William Nicol / Rivonia / Allandale / John Voster and Lynnwood exits. On the N3 and the N12,

the Elands & Gillooly's interchanges will be affected. Expected date of completion is end of 2010. Once completed

these route are expected to be tolled.

CENTRAL JOHANNESBURG NELSON MANDELA BRIDGE NORTHBOUND

A lane restriction remains in place after earlier construction work on the bridge - expect delays between Newtown and

Braamfontein

GAUTENG SOWETOCHRIS HANI ROAD

Road works can be encountered after the Maponya Mall due to the RBT projects. Sever traffic congestion can be

expected.

OR TAMBO AIRPORT

The new central terminal building is now in operation. Passengers for domestic and international flights are advised to

arrive 20 minutes earlier than normal to locate the new check-in terminals.

GAUTRAIN PROJECT –JOHANNESBURG CBD

There are roadworks in the Johannesburg CBD area for the new bus lane. Expect delay during peak traveling times.

GAUTRAIN PROJECT - SANDTON

Traffic on Rivonia Road between 5th and West Streets are diverted during construction of the Sandton Station.

GAUTRAIN PROJECT - MODDERFONTEIN

Bombela Civils Joint Venture has commenced with the construction of Centenary Way East in Modderfontein. The

existing Centenary Way will be permanently closed between Ardeer and Modderfontein Roads, due to a portion of the

road traversing through the Gautrain alignment. Access to Modderfontein will be through Modderfontein Road and

Johannesburg Road, whilst access for residents and pedestrians will be maintained at all times. Centenary Way East will

be opened in May 2009.

GAUTRAIN PROJECT - LOVATO ROAD IN SPARTAN

An overpass bridge will be constructed at Lovato Road in Spartan, Kempton Park. The works will necessitate the closure

and deviation of a portion of Lovato Road, in the proximity of the intersection with Plane Road. The Bombela construction

will be implementing Phase II of the road diversion along Green Avenue (Chestnut). Traffic travelling on the eastern side

of Green Avenue Bridge will be diverted to the western side of the bridge. A single lane in both directions will be

maintained. The permanent closure is expected in May 2009.

N1 BRAKFONTEIN INTERCHANGE TO BUCCLEUCH

Construction of six lanes and upgrade of interchanges. Lane restriction may apply in off peak hours. Expected date of

completion is December 2010.

N1 ALLANDALE / BUCCLEUCH INTERCHANGES

Motorists are able to use the emergency lanes during congested periods. Sections of the road have been clearly marked

and electronic overhead signs indicate if the lane is open (green arrow) and may be used or closed (red cross).

N1 BUCCLEUCH / SOWETO

Construction of six lanes and upgrade of interchanges. Lane restriction may apply in off peak hours. Expected date of

completion is December 2010.

N1 WESTERN BYPASS

Routine maintenance work is in progress from Rivonia Road to 14 Avenue. Lane closures and traffic disruptions may be

encountered during off peak hours. Repairs are in progress on the Ben Schoeman highway between Buccleuch and

Brakfontein Interchanges.

N1 ROODEPOORT

Bridge construction works with lane restrictions between the Main Reef Road bridge and the Soweto Highway exit

expect peak-time delays in both directions

N1 DIEPKLOOF

Roadworks - expect delays through the construction area between the Golden Highway exit and the Rand Show Road

Interchange

N1 JOHANNESBURG / PRETORIA

Construction of additional lanes and other improvements from R21 interchange up to Atterbury Interchange.

N3 GELDENHUIS INTERCHANGE TO BUCCLEUCH INTERCHANGE

Construction of six lanes and upgrade of interchanges. Lane restriction may apply in off peak hours. Expected date of

completion is December 2010.

N3 HEIDELBERG WEG INTERCHANGE TO GELDENHUIS INTERCHANGE

Construction of six lanes and upgrade of interchanges. Lane restriction may apply in off peak hours. Expected date of

completion is December 2010.

R24 / N12 SPLIT AFTER GILLOOLY'S UP TO THE R21 TOWARDS OR TAMBO INT AIRPORT

Roadworks in progress at night and during off-peak hours. Lane closures and delays may be encountered. Allow

additional travelling time between Pretoria and the Airport. Alternative routes are recommended.

N12 READING TO ELANDS INTERCHANGE

Construction of six lanes and upgrade of interchanges. Lane restriction may apply in off peak hours. Expected date of

completion is December 2010.

PRETORIA

HILDA STREET BRIDGE (PRETORIA)

Hilda Street Bridge in Hatfield will be extended. Upon completion, the bridge will serve as an overpass carrying traffic

across the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC) and Gautrain alignments. The extension of the bridge will

take place in two phases from 02 February 2009 and is expected to be completed in July 2009.

Phase I - Construction works will commence along the westbound carriageway. Hilda Street will be reduced from two

lanes to a single lane between Park and Arcadia Streets. Traffic close to the construction site will be controlled by stop–

go traffic management. A temporary traffic island will be constructed at the intersection of Park and Hilda Streets to

prevent motorist from turning right from Park Street into Hilda Street. Phase II - Works will be carried along the

eastbound carriageway. Traffic will be deviated onto the newly extended westbound carriageway. Hilda Street will

remain one lane with stop –go traffic management being implemented.

N14 BEN SCHOEMAN CARRIAGEWAY

The Bombela construction team is preparing to implement Phase II of the deviations along the Ben Schoeman Highway,

north of the Eufees Road exit. Over the past few months, southbound traffic has been deviated onto temporary lanes to

allow Bombela to construct a cut and cover structure that will carry the Gautrain beneath Ben Schoeman. Phase I of the

construction works affecting the southbound lanes has been completed, and will result in traffic along the southbound

carriageway being reinstated to its original position. Phase II of the construction works, which will affect traffic along the

northbound carriageway (towards Pretoria), will commence on 12 October 2008. Northbound traffic will be deviated onto

lanes situated to the right of the existing road. Construction along the northbound carriageway is expected until end

2009, after which traffic will be reinstated to its original position.

N1 PRETORIA

Roadworks - right hand lane closed between the N4 Highway Interchange and the Lynnwood Road bridge

N1 RIGEL AVENUE / ATTERBURY ROAD (PRETORIA)

Construction is in progress on the Garsfontein Road Bridge. Lane closures may be encountered.

N1 NORTH & SOUTHBOUND

Construction of additional lanes and other improvements are in progress between Atterbury Road & R21 Interchange.

Lane closures and reduced speed limits will apply.

N1 NORTH & SOUTHBOUND

Roadworks are in progress between N4 Interchange & the Zambesi Drive with lane restrictions.

MAIN ROUTES

N1 LOUIS TRICHARDT / POLOKWANE (PIETERSBURG) D14

Road in a very good condition. Pedestrians and stray animals could be encountered.

N1 POLOKWANE D14

The Nelson Mandela Interchange is closed for major road works. The is a detour route behind the motor city and clear

sign posts.

N1 POLOKWANE (PIETERSBURG) / BELA BELA (WARMBATHS) D14 / E13

Resealing operations are in progress between Bela Bela Interchange and Polokwane. Possible lane restrictions may be

encountered. Expected date of completion is April 2009.

N1 GRASMERE TOLL PLAZA G12

Incidents of stone-throwing and obstruction on the road have been reported in past years, just after the Grasmere Toll

Plaza towards Evaton (South). Beware of pedestrians. Exercise caution and be vigilant. Daytime travelling is advised.

N1 VAAL TOLL PLAZA / KROONSTAD H12

Strong winds occasionally occur in this area and can be very dangerous. Motorists and especially truck drivers are

advised to exercise caution and reduce speed in such conditions.

N1 KROONSTAD / BLOEMFONTEIN H12 / K11

The road is potholed between Bloemfontein and Verkeerdevlei toll plaza. Construction of a second carriageway between

Bloemfontein and the Verkeerdevlei toll plaza is taking place. Two lanes are open to traffic and a restriction of shoulder

width is in place. A reduced speed limit is enforced. Beware of construction vehicles. Expected date of completion is

February 2010. Beware of pedestrians and heavy vehicle activity in Ventersburg. Urban speed restrictions are in place.

N1 BLOEMFONTEIN / COLESBERG K11 / L10

The road is potholed and very uneven in places. Reconstruction of the road is in progress between Orange River bridge

and Springfontein with Stop/Go controls in operation. Delays of ± 20 minutes at a time can be expected. Expected date

of completion is October 2009.

N1 COLESBERG / THREE SISTERS M8

Construction works are in progress over a 30km section just north of Three Sisters with Stop/Go control in operation.

Three Stop/Go and traffic-light controls may be expected, with waiting periods of ± 20 minutes. Expected date of

completion is September 2009. The road is very uneven, caution is advised.

N1 THREE SISTERS/BEAUFORT WEST M7

Routine maintenance teams maybe encountered. Exercise caution

N1 LEEU-GAMKA / LAINGSBURG N6 / P5

Routine maintenance teams may be encountered. Beware of pedestrians and stray animals in the vicinity of Leeu-

Gamka.

N1 LAINGSBURG / WORCESTER P5 / P4

Beware of pedestrians and stray animals north of De Doorns.

N1 WORCESTER / HUGENOT TUNNEL P4

The road is uneven and speed restrictions are enforced. Construction works are in progress between Koelenhof

BEITBRIDGE / JOHANNESBURG / CAPE TOWN

N1 PAARL P3

Roadworks are causing heavy delays through the R304 Klipheuwel exit towards Paarl. The R101 can be used as an

alternative route.

N2 ERMELO/PIET RETIEF G14/H15

It is in a fair to poor condition. Exercise caution.

N2 PIET RETIEF / MPUMALANGA BORDER H15 / H16

Resealing and strengthening operations are in progress. Expected date of completion is end of 2010. The road is in fair

to poor condition, potholed and uneven in places.

N2 MPUMALANGA BORDER / PONGOLA H16

Roadworks are in progress. Road rehabilitation between Pongola Town and the Mpumalanga border has commenced.

Traffic will be restricted to single lane passage with Stop/Go controls in operation. Expected date of completion is May

2010.

N2 MDLOTI RIVER K16

Construction is in progress of a new interchange for the King Shaka Int. Airport north of the Mdloti River. A reduced

clearance limit for construction of the bridge deck over the N2 as well as possible deviations may be encountered.

Speed reductions are enforced. Expected date of completion is March 2010.

N2 DURBAN K16 & K15

A new project has commenced which focuses on the upgrading of the Inanada/Umgeni Interchanges. Limited impact to

the N2 traffic may be expected with occasional closure of the slow lanes and reduction in speed. Stop/Go control will be

in operation at the on-off ramps.

N2 MTHATHA / BROOKS NEK M13

Construction in progress from the Mthatha River to 22km north of the River. Stop/Go control is in operation and delays

may be encountered. Expected date of completion is November 2009. The remaining section of the road to Brooks Nek

is in a good to fair condition.

N2 MTHATHA / IDUTYWA M13 / N13

Road surface failures and potholes may occur especially after heavy rains resulting in short term road works. The road

is in a good to fair condition.

N2 IDUTYWA / KEI RIVER N13

Beware of pedestrians and stray animals. Road is in a fair to good condition.

N2 KEI CUTTINGS / BROOKES NEK N13

Extreme caution is advised. This road is in fair condition and prone to potholes after rain. Routine maintenance work

may be encountered. Special care should be exercised in the Bashee Cuttings as the road can become very slippery and

there are sharp bends. Also beware of the danger of rock falls in the Kei Cuttings. Beware of pedestrians and stray

animals. Reduced speed limits will apply.

N2 EAST LONDON / KING WILLIAM'S TOWN O12 / N12

Short term road narrowing for repairs may be encountered, especially between King William's Town and East London.

N2 KING WILLIAM'S TOWN / PORT ELIZABETH N12 / O10

At the Coega River, approximately 40km north of Port Elizabeth construction work is in progress with speed restrictions

in place. At Grahamstown, as slip in the road cutting has caused narrowing of the grahamstown bypass. Repairs are in

progress with road narrowing and speed reductions. Expected date of completion is April 2009 (Grahamstown) and May

2010 (Coega). The remaining section of the road is in fair condition but prone to potholes in the vicinity of Peddi.

N2 VAN STADENS RIVER / THORNHILL / JEFFREYS BAY O10 / P9

Road is in a fair condition. Road works are in operation between Gamtoos River and Van Stadens River. Two Stop/Go

controls are in operation and delays of ± 15 minutes at a time can be expected. Speed restrictions are enforced.

N2 STORMSRIVER / HUMANSDORP O8 / P9

Reconstruction is in progress for the first 14km from Stormsriver to Humansdorp. Speed restrictions are enforced.

Traffic is being deviated onto a bypass and Stop/Go controls are in operation. Delays may be encountered. Beware of

pedestrians in the vicinity of Stormsriver bridge. Expected date of completion is February 2010.

N2

ERMELO / DURBAN / CAPE TOWN

N2 KNYSNA / GEORGE P8 / Q7

The road is in good condion with the exception of the section between Knysna Lagoon Bridge and Knysna Town. From

the Knysna Lagoon Bridge to Knysna town the road is uneven and very narrow with no overtaking opportunities. Routine

maintenance teams may be encountered. Beware of pedestrians and stray animals in the vicinity of Knysna Lagoon.

N2 CALEDON / BOTRIVER Q4

Construction works are in progress between Botriver and Caledon over a 30km section. 3 Stop/Go controls are in

operation with waiting periods of ± 15 minutes at a time. Expected date of completion is October 2009.

N2 SIR LOWRY'S PASS Q3

Frequent poor visibility experienced. Exercise caution at all times. Off-peak roadworks may be encountered with lane

closures and delays. The road between Somerset West and Bot River is in fair condition.

N3 HARRISMITH / VAN REENEN J14

Due to steep gradients, sharp curves, mist and strong winds, motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution at Van

Reenen's Pass.

N3 TUGELA TOLL PLAZA / FRERE J14

Road and concrete repair works are in progress. Possible delays and speed restrictions may be encountered. Expected

date of completion is February 2010.

N3 HOWICK / NOTTINGHAM ROAD K15

Rehabilitation works are in progress. Expected date of completion is April 2010.

N4 RUSTENBURG / BRITS F12

Beware of pedestrians and stray animals in the Bapong area.

N4 WITBANK / MIDDELBURG F14

Early mornings and late afternoons mist and fog which make visibility very poor. Motorists are advised to exercise

caution and to use their headlights and increase following distances. .

N4 WONDERFONTEIN / BELFAST F14 / F15

Rehabilitation is in progress and lane closures and delays may be encountered. Expected date of completion is August

2009.

N5 HARRISMITH / BETHLEHEM J14 / J13

The road is in a fair to good condition but is potholed in places. Various potholes can currently be encountered between

Bethlehem and Kestell. During the wet season occasional potholes may be encountered and routine short term

maintenance work as a result.

N5 BETHLEHEM / WINBURG J13 / J11

The road is in a fair to good condition. Beware of pedestrians in the Paul Roux area. Rehabilitation between Senekal

and Vaalpenspruit (half way towards Winburg) are in progress. Two-way traffic without any overtaking opportunity

together with speed restrictions will be in place. Rehabilitation works with similar restrictions can be expected between

Vals River (near Bethlehem) and Paul Roux from January 2009. Stop/Go controls will be operation for asphalt patching

work.

N5 BLOEMFONTEIN/THABA NCHU/LESOTHO BORDER K11/K12

Beware of stray animals. The section between Tweespruit and Ladybrand is in fair condition and patching operations

are in progress. Short delays may be encountered. Stop / Go controls are in operation with delays of less than 5min at

a time. Rehabilitation has commenced between Tweespruit and Ladybrand.

The section between Smithfield and Reddersburg is in poor condition. Routine maintenance work and patching

operations are also in progress in this section. Stop/Go control is in operation. Please adhere to designated signs and

reduced speed limits. Construction between Smithfield and Paryshoogte to commence in February 2010.

N6 QUEENSTOWN / CATHCART M11 / N12

No construction. Motorists may encounter occasional short-term closures over short sections for routine maintenance

N7 CITRUSDAL / CLANWILLIAM N4 / N3

20km North of the Piekenierskloof Pass, the road is uneven and potholed. Repairs have been made but routine

maintenance work is still in progress. The road is in fair condition.

N7 CLANWILLIAM / GARIES N3/ J2

The road is in a fair to good condition.

N7 GARIES / VIOOLSDRIFT L2 / J2

Beware of pedestrians and stray animals in the vicinity of Okiep and Steinkopf. Routine maintenance teams may be

encountered.

N8 GROBLERSHOOP/KIMBERLEY J7/J9

Routine maintenance teams may be encountered. Beware of stray animals along the route.

N8 GROBLERSHOOP / BLOEMFONTEIN J6 / J9

The road is in fair condition. Occasional maintenance works may be encountered.

N8 KIMBERLEY / BLOEMFONTEIN J9 / K11

The road is in fair condition. Maintenance works are continuous throughout this route. Stop/Go controls will be in

operation with delays of less than 5min at a time. Rehabilitation has commenced between Kloofeinde and De Brug.

N8 BLOEMFONTEIN K11

A new project for the construction of the Bloemfontein Airport Interchange is planned to commence in December 2008.

Deviations will be in place, diverting traffic on new ramps during construction of the overpass bridge. Signposts will be

erected to guide motorists.

N8 BLOEMFONTEIN / THABA NCHU / LESOTHO BORDER K11 / K12

Beware of stray animals. The section between Tweespruit and Ladybrand is in fair condition and patching operations are

in progress. Short delays may be encountered. Stop / Go controls are in operation with delays of less than 5min at a

time. Rehabilitation is scheduled to commence in June 2009 between Tweespruit and Ladybrand.

N9 COLESBERG / NOUPOORT L10 / M9

Sections between Noupoort and Hugoslaagte Station are very narrow with narrow bridges. Overtaking areas are limited

and the road is potholed in places.

N9 GRAAFF-REINET / MIDDELBURG N9 / M9

Rock falls may occur in the passes. Construction works are in progress with resealing operations and stabilizing of

slopes. Extensive Stop/Go controls will be in operation. Reduced speed limits will apply and delays may be expected.

Speed reductions will apply. Expected date of completion is July 2009. The road approximately 10km north of Graaff

Reinet is very uneven.

N9 WILLOWMORE / GRAAFF-REINET O8 / N9

The road is in a fair to good condition. No construction is in operation but routine maintenance may be encountered

The road is in poor condition. High clearance vehicles are recommended.

ELLIOTDALE / COFFEE BAY (EASTERN CAPE) M13 / M14

The road is in reasonable condition from Elliotdale turn-off to Umtata Mouth turn-off. The road is potholed.

GEELBEK / LANGEBAAN (WESTERN CAPE) P3

The road now belongs to the National Parks Board and is closed to the public.

BLANCO ROAD - GEORGE (WESTERN CAPE) P7

The section of the road between the N2 Highway and the Airport via Blanco has been closed or bridge repairs.

Diversions are in operation for passenger vehicles. Trucks are being re-routed via central George.

NB: Caution is recommended on all gravel roads to the coastal resorts in the Eastern Cape, as they can become very

slippery and dangerous in wet weather and there conditions are their condition become very poor.
